Mustangs Take Out 10th Ranked Burlington

Hempstead returned to the state play-offs with a convincing 28-14 win over a powerful 7-2 Burlington team. In a road trip to remember, the Mustangs traveled 3 hours to defeat the highly ranked MAC opponent and make their 3rd trip to state under Head Coach Mark Ehlers. The Mustangs took control early with great defense and a big play by Alex Brown and a huge touchdown pass from Jordan Decker to Riley Anderson to end the half. Josh Lenz then took over the second half with his rushing and defensive prowlness. The senior Iowa State recruit was spectacular on both sides of the ball. Linemen Tyler Bellows and Andrew Roos controlled the vastly improved defense line while linebackers Brock Haas, Dillon Hefel and Matt Knabel continued their consistent linebacker play. Corners TJ Houselog and Brad Duwe were solid through out the night. Offensively the Mustangs moved the ball at will led by senior center John Hefel and the big red head Lucas Link. The "O" was able to control the ball and collect over 400 yards against the top ranked MAC defense. Excellent game plans were designed by Coach Haas, Coach Oswald, Coach Kuhle and Coach Bahl. Next up is power house Cedar Rapids Washington on Monday night at Dalzell Field.

Mustangs Battle City High

The 3rd ranked Little Hawks defeated the Mustangs 34-21 in a game closer than the score showed. City ran an excellent fake punt to score it's first TD and later punched in another score at half to lead 14-0. Hempstead countered with a touchdown by Josh Lenz but couldn't stop the Little Hawks in their next possession. City High was led by star QB A.J. Derby who proved how good he is by playing an excellent all around game. The Mustangs also received a rushing TD by Brock Haas and a Brad Duwe TD catch from Matt Ehlers. Kicker Chris Huss was 3 for 3 for extra points. Mustangs will now battle Senior for the City Championship.

Cedar Falls Defeats Mustangs

The 8th ranked Tigers took advantage of mistakes to defeat Hempstead 42-19. The Mustangs had too many costly turnovers and penalties during a hard hitting MVC contest. Cedar Falls also used some big plays on offense to help put the Mustangs away. Josh Lenz continued his hard running by having another 100 yard plus game. The Mustangs now will prepare for 3rd ranked Iowa City High.

Rain and Trojans Defeated

Even the weather couldn't stop the Stangs from winning their third straight game 22-6. The rain came down the entire game as Josh Lenz, Dillon Hefel and Riley Anderson scored touchdowns.

Chris Huss added 2 extra points and Matt Ehlers dived into the endzone for a two point conversion. Lenz had another fine game with 176 yards rushing. Big John Hefel had an excellent game blocking at his center position.

Defensively the Mustangs only gave up 150 total yards in offense to East. Brock Haas and Josh Lenz were leading tacklers on the slippery soaked field. Next up for the Mustangs is 10th ranked Cedar Falls.

Mustangs top Eagles 21-12

The Mustang football team was victorious over Wahlert in a hard hitting game at the Rock Bowl in front of 4,000 fans. The Mustangs were led by Josh Lenz with two touchdowns. Jordan Decker also scored and Brock Haas had over 100 yards rushing for the offense. John Hefel and Andrew Roos were important blockers for the offense.

The defense was guided by Haas and Matt Knabel who both seemed to be all over the field. The defense held a high scoring Wahlert offense to just 12 points. Lenz scored on an exciting 68 yard pass interception to help secure the win. Riley Anderson came up with an excellent interception to stop an Eagle drive late in the game.

Mustang special teams again played extremely well. Chris Huss has kicked 7 straight extra points to start the year. The kickoff team has also started the year out strong proving the importance of special teams in football. The long snapper, Shawn McGinnis, has been perfect this year.

The team had a great week of preparation for the game. All 50 players helped contribute to the big win. Thanks to the parents and sponsors for that great pre-game meal on Thursday.

Mustangs lend a helping hand!

24 players and coaches traveled to Elkader, Iowa to help clean up after flooding. The trip was eye opening for all involved and proved to be a learning experience for everyone. Elkader was a friendly town that was very appreciative of the help given by the team. Jobs included mud clean up, fence fixing, trash and tree removal, drywall and insulation removal an other tasks that were given to us by the volunteer coordinator. I am very proud of how the team stepped up to help people in need.
