Six Win Streak

After a bad  third quarter verses Xavier in week three, the Mustangs have won six straight to end the regular season 7-2.  The team re-dedicated itself after that game and have looked sharp during this impressive winning six week run.  Improved overall depth has been a major reason for the excellent play. The defense has been getting better every week and is led by Jay Gonzales (75), Mitch Berendes (51) and Gage Heffernan (26).  The offense is continuing to be consistent and is led by Cody Leach (4), Brad Duwe (5) and Adam Kennedy (54).  The kicking game is anchored by Kyle Wiest (34) and long snapper Chad Crabill (28).  The Mustangs are now headed to the playoffs. City Champs x 3

The Mustangs captured their third straight City Championship with a 42-7 victory over Senior.  Cody Leach threw touchdown passes to Brad Duwe, Chad Peppmeier and two to Connor Ehlers in a near perfect night of passing.  Along the way Layton Fritsch ran in a TD and Brad Duwe scooped and scored on defense from near mid field.  Kyle Wiest connected on all of his PAT's in the big win.  Coaches Chuck Haas, Nate Oswald, Jamie Bahl and Cody Krug again had excellent game planning and adjustments along the way.  The Mustangs now are preparing for always tough CR Prairie in an exciting Homecoming game. Fun Three Game Streak

The Mustangs are enjoying a three game win streak including a big win over city rival Wahlert.  After a 1-2 start, the team has now found more depth and is playing with greater passion and emotion.  The next three games are equally important for the team and will determine the playoff position of the Mustangs.  Senior is the next opponent and will be a tough team to defeat.  Senior has shown improvement over the weeks while playing a tough schedule.  The team finishes the year with Prairie and Jefferson and hopefully a playoff game to follow.  Come watch exciting football at Dalzell Field the next two consecutive Fridays. Three Tough Games

The Mustangs have started the season 1-2 after losses to 2 top ranked football teams.  The lone win was at home versus Iowa City West who were also receiving votes in the polls.  Gage Heffernan was voted MVC Player of the Week for the the IC West game.  He had 2 touchdowns and played great on defense.  The team has lofty goals and plans on working to achieve these goals.  This weeks game is at University of Dubuque versus Waterloo East.

Mustangs In The Community

On Friday, football players and managers helped the St. Mark Community Center by moving many boxes of school supplies to the Grand Harbor Event Center.  The "Apples for Students" program is designed to help students in need who cannot afford essential school supplies.  The team enjoys helping out with programs in the community.

Mustang Football Camps Host 335 Athletes

Last week the Hempstead football fields were full of athletes learning the game.  Three different camps were held for elementary, junior high and high school football players.  Coaches and players had a great time working on their skills together and many onlookers enjoyed watching the drills from the sidelines.  A special treat was having the U.S. Army personnel assist and sponsor our high school camp.  They helped us realize the similarities between athletics and the military philosophy.  I was especially proud of our high school athletes who helped coach at the elementary and junior high camps.  Both groups benefited from the experience.

Mustangs Commit

Five Hempstead football players have signed on to play college football this year.  This puts the current number of college football players at 15 from Hempstead.  A major goal of the program is that players develop the passion to continue playing at the college level.

  • Brock Haas  Truman State University
  • Tyler McAtee  Iowa Central
  • TJ Houselog  University of Dubuque
  • Dan Riedl  Wisconsin Platteville
  • Matt Ehlers  Wartburg College

Brock Haas pulls the defense along as he gains yards against CR Kennedy.

Tyler McAtee forces a fumble as he brings down the Little Hawks offensive runner.

TJ Houselog speeds past the Cedar Falls defender to make yards for the Mustangs.

Dan Riedl keeps Wahlert defenseman at bay.

Matt Ehlers dives for the end zone against Cedar Falls.

Shrine Bowl Game

Hempstead All-Stater Matt Ehlers will be playing in the Shrine Bowl Football Game at Iowa State University this July.  The game is a major fund raiser for the Shriner sponsored hospitals that help children around the country.  Players practice for one week and then play in the the game against other all-stars from across Iowa.  Matt is the 10th consecutive Shrine Bowl player from Hempstead High School.  Other Dubuque area players are Mike Meyer(Wahlert), NickCarolan(Senior), Evan Ressler(Cascade) and Tyler Rutenbeck(Maquoketa).  The game is played on July 24th and shown on cable TV the next day on Channel 22.
